The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) created Healthy People 2030, a national health promotion and illness prevention project. The goals of Healthy People 2030 were selected with considerations using national data. Healthy People 2030s mission is to raise the standard of health and well-being across the country by collaborating as a group to reach their goals to improve health and well-being. The three main objectives of this project are core, developmental, and research objectives (OASH, n.d). Core objectives include goals for the decade, while developmental objectives represent significant public health concerns that should be addressed through evidence-based interventions. However, more baseline data is currently needed for these interventions (OASH, n.d). Last, research objectives refer to public health challenges associated with major disparities between population groups, a high cost of health, the economy, or both, but still need to be linked to evidence-based interventions (OASH, n.d).
The health disparity I see every day at work and chose for this topic is Obesity. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (n.d), 1 in 5 children and adolescents and 2 in 5 adults are obese in the United States, while many others are overweight. As we all know, obesity is linked to many health problems, including diabetes and heart disease. Healthy People 2030’s focus is to assist individuals in eating healthy and obtaining adequate physical activity. At the national level, policies on nutritional programs and dietary guidelines are being updated to encourage healthier eating patterns. Community-based programs such as walking clubs and cooking classes are implemented at the local level to promote physical activity and healthy eating (OASH, n.d). These initiatives seek to decrease the incidence of obesity by promoting conditions that encourage healthy habits. Healthcare professionals, communities, individuals, and the federal, state, and local governments must work together with such project consistently to tackle all of the health disparities and achieve Healthy People 2030s goals.
