.After reading the case study of Mrs. M, she could benefit from either Cognitive Behavioral Theory or Multicultural Counseling & Therapy. Mrs. M is originally from India; she emigrated to the States, where we have cultures different from the ones she’s used to. Sometimes, a new way of looking at an issue is enough to produce change. I know for myself when I’m in a situation or my mental health has an issue, I look at my problems from all lenses or angles. “It helps tremendously every time I do this. “It takes into account the variations and differing viewpoints that inform the worldview of those from another cultural and socioeconomic background” (2021.).
I also believe Mrs M would improve using Cognitive Behavioral Theory. Not only does Mrs. M suffer from depression and stress, but I also feel like she may have some anxiety problems as well. CBT involves efforts to change thinking patterns and behavioral patterns. “People suffering from psychological problems can learn better ways of coping with them, thereby relieving their symptoms and becoming more effective in their lives” (American Psychological Association.).
Even though Mrs. M left India over 20 years ago, she was still raised in a different culture, so I need to make sure I’m sensitive in that area. I would get to the bottom of her anger so we could work together and figure out what was causing it and a plan of action to help Mrs. M. I also asked questions about Mrs. M’s mother and her green card situation. I could research and refer her to someone who can help her in that area of expertise. An ethical principle that might impact my approach is if I’m not open and don’t respect Mrs. M’s culture and beliefs. If I’m closed off and don’t show any awareness of multiculturism, there could be a problem. She may not open up to me about any of her problems. “Human Service professionals are knowledgeable about the cultures and communities they practice. They respect the cultures and beliefs of individuals and groups” (Burke.).
