Discuss the impact of expanding technology in developing countries upon the increased burden of chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and hypertension.
Technology use has increased in health care over the past several years. E-Health is utilized between health care clinics and providers, encompassing both m-Health and telemedicine. M-Health has been found to be useful for patient education, monitoring, and communication; reducing disease burden linked with poverty; improving access to health care and services; and managing chronic disease (Marcolino et al., 2018). Telemedicine is the oldest of these and has been around since the 1920s (Zaman et al., 2017).
Mobile phones have become the most widely used tool in health care. They enable clinics and providers to communicate with their patients: appointment reminders, communication of lab results, keeping track of blood glucose and blood pressures, and, more recently, tele-health appointments. They provide a convenient avenue for health care accessibility, increasing access for rural and impoverished areas. Cellular devices are widely available in developed countries, and increasingly in impoverished ones as well.
Technological advances include global access to the Internet. For those who do not have access to a mobile phone or device, they most likely either have access to or know someone with access to the Internet. Universal Internet access is a goal that is believed to be achieved within the next decade (Mitchell & Kan, 2019). The World Health Organization (WHO) is working on a universal health care delivery system that they hope will work on a global level. Universal Internet access will aid in this endeavor.
The role of the health care provider is changing. Instead of directing patients in their health care, they are becoming facilitators of knowledge. Patients come to the provider with pre-conceived notions of what they feel may be wrong with them, based on their findings on the Internet or conversations with family and friends. Technology is steadily changing healthcare and opening up avenues that were previously closed, including in those developing countries. Already, there have been improvements in overall population health and health care resources in recent decades. This trend will continue as technology and health care proceed in their partnership for global health.
