Throughout my career I have gone on four medical missions to Haiti since 2011 and the country has a strong place in my heart. I have watched the changes to systems and things improve and decline over the years. While there is a significant turmoil currently in that area, there are significant areas for development and health concern in the area. In the western hemisphere, Haiti remains the poorest country struggling with difficulties such as gang violence, environmental disturbances as well as infrastructure concern limiting the ability to treat patients in rural areas (Sripad et al., 2021). These are some of the reasons I have chosen to focus research on Haiti during this course.
There are multiple health concerns that are of interest to me as I focus on the adult population. The communicable diseases that I wish to focus on include TB and HIV. While there have been significant improvements to HIV prevention in Haiti, 2.2% of the population continues to be diagnosed with HIV (Joshi et al., 2020). Some of the improvements over the years included education, especially with at risk populations (Joshi et al., 2020). With the recent environmental disturbances as well as concern with infrastructure additional support needs to become available to help with maintaining these decreased levels as well as continued improvement for years to come (Joshi et al., 2020).
The noncommunicable diseases I wish to focus on are diseases such as hypertension and cardiac concerns. Due to the lack of infrastructure in rural areas it is difficult to get adequate healthcare to the individuals in Haiti (Sripad et al., 2021). The inability to manage hypertension could lead to more serious diseases such as stroke or myocardial infarctions (MI) (Sripad et al., 2021). the prevalence of hypertension in Haiti is about 47% and maintains one of the more deadly diseases that affects the population (Sripad et al., 2021).
Another noncommunicable disease I would like to focus on throughout this course is Malaria.
The U.N Sustainable Development goals that I am interested in exploring are zero hunger, good health and well-being, clean water and sanitations and quality education. By focusing on these goals, we can make a significant contribution to the overall health of the country.

For my Global Health Assessment project, I am interested in researching the country of Uganda with a focus on pediatric populations. In this region of the world, malaria and anemia are of particular concern, especially amongst children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2023) approximately 241 million cases of malaria occurred worldwide causing 627,000 people to die, most of whom were children in sub-Saharan Africa. Additionally, Obeagu et al. (2023) states that 46-66% of children under the age of five are affected by anemia in developing countries for a variety of reasons including malaria and malnutrition. Based on these findings, I am interested in exploring more about Sustainable Development Goal number 2, zero hunger, and number 3, good health and well-being. I am hoping to find in my research that there is significant work taking place towards these goals to alleviate these problems in Uganda.
During my undergraduate education at Denver College of Nursing, I was a member of Global Health Perspectives where I had the opportunity to travel with a small group of students to Iquitos, Peru. In our time there we partnered with an organization called dbPeru to provide sustainable healthcare teachings throughout a handful of villages along the Amazon river. The trip was extremely educational and rewarding and I highly recommend partaking in global health opportunities such as this. At the same time, another group of students traveled to Uganda to partner with The Mango Project for the same purposes. I would have loved to partake in that trip as well, so that is why I have decided to focus my project on Uganda now. I am looking forward to learning more about the country and its role in global health.
