Select one of the topic areas listed above to write a thesis-based persuasive essay. A persuasive essay involves generating a question on the topic you choose, taking a position on your question, and convincing your readers that your argument is sound. Use at least three sources from material that we have reviewed in class (text book readings, articles, novels, videos, etc.) to construct and support the arguments you make in your essay.
Your essay should have three basic parts: an introduction that states your position, a main body that provides the evidence for the position you take, and a conclusion that summarizes your argument. It should be typed and double-spaced, in an appropriate 12-point font. Your essay should include MLA style in-text citations and a work sited page. Be sure that your essay is carefully crafted and copy-edited. While you will be graded on the strength of your arguments and the thoughtfulness of your ideas, presentation does matter. This means that essays should not contain spelling mistakes or any other grammatical errors. Submit your essay to Canvas in a word document. Always keep an extra printed copy of your essay for your records.
If you would like feedback on a proposed topic for your essay, submit an essay proposal by May 9th that includes the following:
Working title and short topic description
Draft thesis statement: your thesis statement should include a declarative sentence placed in the first paragraph.
In this essay I will argue…
I believe/think…
Outline: Students regularly write essays without a plan. As a result, poor organization is a common weakness of undergraduate essays. The best way to construct your plan and to organize information for maximum effect is to put together an outline. An outline serves to lay out your essay’s structure, to ensure that it is complete and logical, and to prevent you from getting off the track. It ensures that you stay focused, cover all the relevant information and arguments, and write an accurate summary for your conclusions.
