Advanced Practice Nursing Decisions that Cause Moral Distress

Hello everyone,
My name is Tiffany Nicholson, and I’m a Critical Care Nurse. I want to become a capable Nursing Leader. Nursing leaders in critical care units should demonstrate ethical decision-making with insight, empathy, and awareness of patient-centered care (Kwame & Petrucka, 2021). As a nursing manager, I cannot deny the enormous responsibility we might encounter while trying to make ethical, legal, and morally correct decisions. In the fast-changing world of healthcare, these decisions have big repercussions on how patients are treated, organizational values, and the level of respect the community has for healthcare institutions.
In my role, I see myself as a practitioner and an advocate for ethical principles and legal standards. I see transparency and open communication as a way of building a work environment that is free to discuss ethical dilemmas and leadership mistakes. By promoting a shared understanding of ethical principles and legal standards, you contribute to a work environment where moral distress is minimized and ethical dilemmas are addressed constructively (Herrity, 2021). The process of involving my team in the decision-making and encouraging others to share views and ideas will be vital in ensuring we all have a common understanding of the ethical frameworks and legal obligations behind our actions.
The best way to reduce the moral distress that ethical dilemmas cause is to strive to be the first in education and support in my healthcare setting. Such measures include carrying out routine sessions on ethical judgment, creating platforms where the workers can seek assistance/advice on difficult decisions, and creating a favorable work setting where moral concerns are heard and addressed (Andersson et al., 2022). Integrity, compassion, and autonomy are the main cornerstones that constitute the character traits of how I manage my leadership work. This is the net of values that I look through to unravel difficult ethical chances and to lead to giving priority to patient-oriented healthcare.
