You must engage with at least 3 sociological topics we have covered in this semester, such as family, gender, race/ ethnicities, racism, class, stratification/ inequalities/ poverty, culture/ subcultures/ cultural norms, groups/subgroups, policing, crime, deviance, health, functionalism, conflict theories, the state, social institutions, social structures and processes, and more found in this film. In your introduction, please clearly identify the three or so topics you will integrate into your essay. We suggest you pick 3 chapters/topics, and then focus on 2-3 terms from each week/chapter to discuss specifically for each.
Once you select your topics, dig deep into the text and PPTs to draw on specific theories, concepts, and insights and integrate them into your essay. We are expecting you to 1) define each sociological term you are writing about, and 2) apply it to a concrete example from the film or the film’s context. That is, don’t take it for granted that your meaning is clear to us, and do include an explanation of your thinking. For example: “The scene in which [X character] does [Y action] is a good example of [Z concept] from chapter 3, because [explanation…].”
NOTE: To be able to do this, you will need to know the names of the characters of the two main families, among others.
Make sure to reference your sources when drawing on specific concepts and sociological insights from the book text (chapter and page #) or lectures (number and date), recitation (date/week) or exercise, etc. You may use any standard format for text-based citations, just stay consistent. You may use outside sources for basic information (statistics, historical context, etc) but are not expected to.
You have to connect aspects of the movie to the sociology we have learned. Simply summarizing the movie will lead to a low grade. Well-crafted essays highlighting appropriate sociological topics and concepts/insights drawn from class material will improve dramatically your score.

Remember that this is a sociological paper, so refrain from using morally charged arguments; do not apply your particular morals to a situation, but instead remain an observer, using your sociological imagination.
