A photovoice is qualitative method used in community participatory research to document and reflect on community issues and concerns. As we move throughout the semester, we will be learning about the Social Determinants of Health and what issues urban communities like New York City experience.
To start their photovoice assignment, students will choose one health topic/health issue to focus on for the entirety of the semester. They will apply what they learn each week to their health issues topics/issues. Using a slide format (PowerPoint, google slides, key, pdfs, etc.), students will complete the following:
Introduce your health topic. (10 points)
Tell us why you feel like it is important to you, your community, and/or public health. Talk about the importance of this being addressed.
Take 10 photos. (30 points)
At least 2 of these photos can be the same photo in different locations IF it is relevant to your story.
At least 2 of these photos can be from the internet.
These photos should tell a story of the community and the health issue that impacts this community.
These pictures can depict negative and/or positive impacts.
It can be a picture of anything as long as you can explain its relation to your health topic.
Each picture will need a detailed description of why you chose this photo and what it depicts.
Choose an organization that addresses your topic.
What is the name of your organization? (10 points)
What is the purpose, mission, vision, etc.?
What issues are they addressing?
What services do they provide to address these issues? (10 points)
How are they addressing these issues?
What communities do they serve?
What gaps in services exists? (10 points)
What services are they missing?
Are they missing any populations of people that could benefit from these services?
Are there any issues with accessibility? (Can people access services easily? Appointment times, resources, etc.)
THERE ARE ALWAYS GAPS. THINK CRITICALLY. DO NOT TURN IN AN ASSIGNMENT WITHOUT GAPS.
What will fix the issues presented above? (10 points)
What are some ways that this organization can continue or do better to address the problem?
What plans, resources, services can be added or planned to address the gaps in services and reach people outside of their current population served?
