How the Final Essay Works:
1) Choose one to two class texts (books/literature and films) that you want to focus on in your critical literary and film analysis. You will dig deeply into these texts: using many examples in the language and imagery to make your points and arguments. Think LITERARY analysis. Do not gloss over these texts. You need to bring in many specific examples to “show” the reader and not “tell.” Reread the literary and rewatch your film texts. You will pick up so many points and examples that will enhance this essay!!! Do not generalize or summarize. Be specific with concrete examples from the literature and films.
2) Focus on one environmental issue and how it works in the texts you are analyzing in this essay. Bring in your secondary research when you discuss the environmental issue (be sure to cite your sources). You “may” draw on two or three issues if it makes sense (i.e water issues and climate, or toxic water pollution; or ecofeminism and climate; or environmental racism and climate–check in with me about this). Remember, whatever environmental issue you focus on, it has to DIRECTLY connect to the literary or film text.
3) You may/should bring in your own experience/voice as it ties into the topic you are writing about in the essay. But it must FIT directly and clearly into the thesis of your essay. For example: if you have had an experience with cancer in your family and a probably link to nuclear radiation–this fits with Welcome to Shirley; if you have lost women in your family to breast cancer — this connects to Refuge: An Unnatural History; if you have experienced environmental racism, or patriarchal oppression (ecofeminism)–these would fit with Parable; or if you have personal experiences or fears about climate change, this fits with climate in Parable,
