A Critique of “The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism”
Essay prompt:
In this assignment, you will write a book review, exploring the limits of Weber’s arguments and sociological approach while also taking a stance. This entails a discussion of his shortcomings; however, a critique does not solely mean criticizing or thrashing the book and its author’s approach. Instead, you should aim to discuss his contributions as well, and whether and how they provide us with a better understanding of the subject matter, as well as how he fails to account for what he set himself to explain and elucidate. You can ask yourself questions of the following sort: “What are the advantages and disadvantages of his approach?” “What are the things that I found the most and least convincing or problematic in his argument, and why?”
Your critique should be informed by other authors we read (quite naturally, as you can’t unlearn what you have learned and many of those should come in handy). Make sure to substantiate some of your discussion with at least two authors from the syllabus. Again, I want to hear your own voice/stance and your reasoning behind it (which might include drawing on other authors’ arguments or illustrating your points with real-world examples), and this could come quite naturally in the conclusion paragraph.
Wherever appropriate, use parenthetic in-text citations that include the page numbers to which you’re referring. Example: Hobbes argues that life in the state of nature is violent and short (Hobbes, p. 186).
Outside sources are not recommended for this assignment.
Your reviews should typically be around 4 double-spaced pages. Do not exceed 5 pages – concision is a necessity of good writing, increasingly so in our age of limited attention spans. Use a normal 12-point font and 1-inch margins. Submit your paper as a .pdf file.
My ideas:
Marx and Durkheim would likely be the most effective pairing for critiquing Weber’s “The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism.” Marx provides a direct contrast to Weber’s ideological and cultural explanations of capitalism with a focus on economic structures and class relations. Durkheim adds a different dimension by discussing how societal norms and institutions (including religion) contribute to social cohesion and influence economic activity, thus offering a nuanced critique and supplement to Weber’s focus on individual religious ethics driving economic behavior.
This pairing allows you to explore and critique Weber’s work from both macro-economic (Marx) and socio-cultural (Durkheim) perspectives, providing a comprehensive view of his contributions and limitations.

Introduction
Opening Statement: Introduce the topic and the importance of Weber’s work in the context of sociological theory.
Thesis Statement: Briefly state your main critique and stance regarding Weber’s arguments and approach, including a preview of how Marx and Durkheim will help develop your critique.
Purpose of the Essay: Outline the objectives of your critique, emphasizing the blend of analysis and your stance on Weber’s interpretations.
Overview of Weber’s Argument
Summary of Key Points: Outline the main thesis of Weber’s work, focusing on the connection between Protestant ethics and the spirit of capitalism.
Contextual Importance: Briefly mention why Weber’s analysis was revolutionary and its impact on sociological and economic studies.
Critical Analysis
Advantages of Weber’s Approach:
Discuss the strengths of Weber’s analysis, such as its detailed linking of religious beliefs with economic behavior and the innovative use of historical data.
Disadvantages of Weber’s Approach:
Point out where Weber might fall short in his analysis. This could involve the lack of consideration for economic structures (Marx’s critique) or the underestimation of the role of societal norms beyond religious beliefs (Durkheim’s perspective).
Comparative Insights
Marx’s Perspective:
Introduce Marx’s theory of capitalism, focusing on the economic base, class struggle, and material conditions.
Contrast this with Weber’s emphasis on culture and ideology, arguing how Marx’s perspective might reveal limitations in Weber’s explanation of capitalism’s origins and nature.
Durkheim’s Perspective:
Explain Durkheim’s views on social cohesion and the role of societal norms.
Discuss how Durkheim’s approach to social structures complements or critiques Weber’s individual-centric analysis of capitalist spirit.
Conclusion and Personal Stance
Synthesis: Draw together the critiques and insights from Marx and Durkheim, showing how they help deepen the understanding of Weber’s work.
Your Stance: Clearly articulate your own stance on Weber’s arguments and sociological approach. Discuss how integrating Marx’s and Durkheim’s views either supports or challenges your critique of Weber.
Future Implications: Suggest what these analyses imply for understanding modern capitalism or future sociological studies.
