This paper is an investigation into the mysteries surrounding those people in India who were called Thugs by colonial British authorities and who were accused of practicing Thugi. As you can see in Van Woerkens’s The Strangled Traveler: Colonial Imaginings and the Thugs of India Thugi as conceived by British officials was gruesome and frightening. As such it has become a popular subject for Hollywood. But as with many things in life, the issue of Thugs and Thugi proved to be more complicated. The purpose of this paper is to analyze one movie (Gunga Din, 1939; Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, 1984; or The Deceivers, 1989) based on your reading of The Strangled Traveler. All you have to do is read this one book and watch the movie of your choice. These movies are the only exposure most people ever have to the Thugs and Thugi. Is the movie of your choice purely Hollywood sensationalism or can something be learned from it? Be specific and use The Strangled Traveler for all the evidence you’ll need.
