Research and provide information about individual works of art, and also to make connections among works of art.

June 28, 2021
Christopher R. Teeple

Follow the rubric I need the best grade possible
The artwork I picked for the project is Andrea del Sarto, Madonna, and Child with John the Baptist (1528) and Rubens, The Holy Family with St. Anne, (c.1630-1635)
In this short paper assignment, you are asked to play the role of museum curator. The role of a curator is to research and provide information about individual works of art, and also to make connections among works of art. You will need to research the artist, (and perhaps the work, if available) and situate it into its larger historical moment in terms of its style, subject matter, or meaning.
There are three tasks you must complete for your artwork:
Supply a museum-quality text panel for a work of art from the NCMA.
Your description must appeal to both a general public and to a specialized audience.
Your description must deepen our understanding of one of the styles/periods we have studied in our course. You should research and provide information on:
The artist and his or her life
The historical/political/biographical context of this artwork
How the artwork relates to the larger art historical time period of which it is an example
So, in short, teach the viewer something focused about the artwork, artist and its time frame. Then relate it to the wider realms of Art History. The best text panels teach us something about the human experience and help us understand the world. I have placed lots of resources, as well as examples of wall texts, for you to examine on Blackboard.
This is a short assignment, so you must focus on precise writing. It must be completely free of errors and show evidence of research and flawless editing. Resist the temptation to write something fancy or flowery. I’m not interested in fluff. I’m interested in clear, logical organization and good research. Keep it simple, direct, confident and empathetic. Write something beautiful.
Paper Format
The text panel project will consist of three parts: a title page, the text panel, and research sources.
First Page:
Your name and the date
Thumbnail image of your artwork.
Name of the artist
Name of the artwork (italicized) and date (in parenthesis)
Medium (oil on canvas, oil on wood panel, etc)
Dimensions
Second/Third Page:
The wall panel text itself will be no more than 300 words. It must be completely free of errors.
Last Page:
On a new page, you must include your research sources. These must be academic sources, cited appropriately. Include a selfie of you at the museum. More information on sources appears below.
Submission
Submit your paper as a WORD DOC or PDF via the Assignment Link in the Week 6 folder on Blackboard. NO OTHER FORMATS ARE PERMITTED. If you write it as a google doc, you must export it as a word doc or pdf and upload in one of these two formats. No exceptions.
Sources
I expect you to find at least three scholarly resources to support your statement.
These sources need to be IN ADDITION TO any information that the NCMA provides on their website or in their wall text at the museum.
Internet sources must come from reputable websites with juried articles. Acceptable sources include:
.EDU sites (colleges and universities)
Museum sites. (Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Louvre, etc)
Google Scholar or Google Books
Met Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History
SmartHistory (Khan Academy)
Articles you’ve found on JSTOR or PROQUEST (available at library. Waketech.edu) https://www.waketech.edu/student-services/libraries/articles-ebooks
Books. Many out of print books are available on Google Books.
NO NON-ACADEMIC SITES ARE PERMITTED.
*Wikipedia and other online encyclopedias will not be considered appropriate research resources for this project.
Any quotes should be cited within the text panel using in-text citations. An MLA style guide link is in the Museum Project folder on Blackboard. This will provide guidance on how to properly locate sources.
*In “real” life, Text Panels in museums usually do not contain in-text citations (parenthetical citations or endnotes).
