The region of Catalonia in eastern Spain held a referendum in 2017 to vote for independence from Spain. The Spanish central government denied the legitimacy of the vote and Catalonian independence has been an open issue ever since. Explore the history of Catalonia, its language and culture and discuss the linguistic, cultural and economic issues that work to pull Spain apart. Also, what factors would contribute to Spain’s continued unity (centrifugal and centripetal forces.)
