Project #2 — Survey Says
Proejct #2 — Survey Says;
DIRECTIONS – Survey Says . . . You are going to write a series of survey questions about a variety of public education topics (suggestions below) and are encouraged to ask (via email, via cellphone, via text, via face-to-face, via skype, via Facebook) as many different demographic groups as possible . . . you will then synthesize your data and prepare a written summary of your experience and your findings (you will be required to submit a copy of the questions and answers you received as well). You MUST ASK a minimum 5 questions.
Demographic Groups: DINKS (double income couple, no kids), retired people, parents of k-12 students, k-12 students themselves, teachers, school personnel, college students, married couple with children, single adult with no children. Please do your best to ensure that you have responses from at least 5 people with different backgrounds.
Question Suggestions:
1. Concerning school funding, what are the three main sources of public school funding in New York State?
2. Of every $1 spent on New York State’s public schools, which expense is the highest?
3. Concerning the purposes of public schools, what three main outcomes or results should our schools be producing?
4. Concerning student achievement, what three main factors would you say contribute to or increase a student’s success?
5. Concerning student achievement, what three main factors would you say interfere with or prohibit a student’s success?
6. Concerning public school governance, who can serve on the Board of Education and what is the process? In other words, once you decide you want to serve on the BoE, what do you need to do to make it happen?
7. Would you like to add any comments about public education in your community?
Do’s and Don’ts of Survey Questions–Do not lead the respondent to any answer–avoid providing examples of the answers. Let the respondent know that “No answer” is a valid answer–saying I don’t know IS an answer! Let the respondent be as specific and long-winded as necessary–we are looking for answer similarities and differences–the more the merrier! You can try to rephrase the question if the respondent seems confused. Don’t force anyone to participate–and, most importantly, HAVE FUN!
Public Education Survey Summary Essay Directions: Your essay will identify the groups and numbers within each group that you surveyed; you will note answer differences and similarities across the demographic groups; you will highlight any epiphanies/startling results/confirmation of suspicions; finally, explain why this survey/the results of this survey are useful/important to future teachers.
