This module has included an overview concerning some of the issues facing the United States in the mid-1800s due to western expansion and the ongoing issue of slavery.
What was the impact of western expansion during the 19th century on domestic policies concerning settlement and slavery? What were some of the beliefs behind the idea of Manifest Destiny?
Why were the annexation of Texas and later the invasion of Mexico so controversial? How did the war with Mexico provoke a conflict over slavery?
What was the Kansas-Nebraska Act and why was it so important? What were some of the fallouts regarding the act?
What did the Confederacy stand for? And how did the Civil War transform American government?
According to the documentary, Slavery by Another Name, what are some of the ways that people and institutions tweaked and adapted race-based chattel slavery to keep systems of involuntary servitude and racial control alive after slavery was abolished?
