What is the main thesis of the article?

June 17, 2021
Christopher R. Teeple

Follow the instructions provided and refer to the 3 attached articles.
Now that you have written your own close reading on some portions of your literary text, the next step is to review what literary scholars have to say about this text, and see how their conversation supports, correlates, or contradicts your interpretation.
For this next formal writing assignment, you will review several academic articles on your author and selected text, and compose an annotated bibliography (sometimes called a Literature Review).
For each article that you review, include the full bibliographic citation. Then, after each citation, write a paragraph (approximately 200 words) summarizing the author’s main thesis and argument.
If possible, identify the theoretical approach of the analysis, i.e., feminist, psychoanalytic, historical, post-colonial, etc.
Finally, evaluate how you will use this work in your final research paper. How can it help you develop your ideas about the text or author, and formulate your own thesis? For annotations of biographies, summarize the writer’s main points and explain how this work will be useful for your final paper.
For each article, answer the following questions in your review:
What is the main thesis of the article?
Do you find the claim convincing?
Does the claim rely on certain assumptions?
What evidence does the author present?
Is the evidence convincing?
How could you use this article to frame your own interpretation of the literary text that you’re studying for the research paper?
Introductory paragraph at beginning of Annotated Biography
After you write your three or four article reviews, compose an introduction (150-250 words) to your annotations that presents your working thesis or research question for the final research paper. Underline or bold your thesis. It should be one sentence.
Evaluation (100 possible points)
The Annotated Bibliography will earn points based on the following criteria:
Are there three reviews of academic articles from the CU Libraries databases that each answer the questions listed above? (50 points)
Does the introductory paragraph present a working thesis? (15 points)
Is it clear how each article contributes to the working thesis? (5 points)
Are the annotations written in clear and concise prose with minimal writing errors? (15 points)
Are the citations and titles formatted correctly, according to MLA style guidelines? (15 points)
