Background
It is 1719, and you have just been appointed Governor of the Turks & Caicos Islands by HRH King George I. Over the last eighteen months, the TCI have gone to hell as damnable dregs, bloodthirsty blackguards, and scurvy scalawags of every odious description are now using it as a base for their nefarious activities. You rose to fame in the Royal Navy as a pirate hunter of sorts, and you got this job because His Majesty feels that you are the best person to put a stop to it.
Your commission from His Majesty reads in part:
“The once idyllic Turks and Caicos have become a vile den of piratical perversion. Indeed, you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. You have at your disposal the full might of the Royal Navy, and are authorized to use any means to blot out this scourge and expunge the pirates’ foul stench from the colony. Anything goes, from the offering of pardons to those who abandon piracy to the pursuit, elimination, capture, imprisonment and/or public execution (preferably in a really yukky way) of those who do not.

Directions: Use the pirate crew you created in the last case study, and pretend they are now using the TCI as a base when the new Governor Pirate Hunter shows up. Use the lectures and the “Pirate Hunter” chapter for ideas to construct your persona as Governor, guide your actions, and determine what the pirates do in response. Write a story FROM THE GOVERNOR’S POINT OF VIEW that addresses the following.
How do you, as Gov. P. Hunter, feel about pirates in general and these pirates in particular? What in your background has caused you to feel this way? (10 points)
What is the pirates’ reaction to your arrival as the new governor? Do they flee? Fight? Call a parley to negotiate? Ot do they simply ignore you and continue to booze up, hijack cargo, and cut throats as usual? (15 points)
What do you (as governor) offer them to entice them to stop, and do they accept? (5 points)
Describe the end game. If they accepted your terms, what becomes of them? If there is a battle, where does it happen and how does it play out? Who wins and who loses? Do they defeat you and get away or get captured and wind up at the end of a rope? (10 points)
What becomes of the TCI? Do you succeed in the mission King George gave you? Why or why not? (10 points)
