The student’s written HBR Signature Assignment is designed to invite the student to provide an in-depth written examination of the HBR assigned series. Read the HBR collection listed below, which is a composite of eight articles.
HBR collection, Influence and Persuasion (HBR Emotional Intelligence Series) Harvard Business Review; Nick Morgan; Robert B. Cialdini; John Antonakis; Bronwen Fryer with Robert McKee; and others
While I recommend reading each of the eight articles in the collection, this paper will focus specifically on these four:
1. Article #1, “Understand the Four Components of Influence,” by Nick Morgan;
2. #2, “Harnessing the Science of Persuasion,” by Robert Cialdini;
3. #3, “Learning Charisma,” by Antonakis, Fenley, and Liechti;
4. #6, “Storytelling that Moves People,” an interview with Robert McKee by Bronwyn Fryer.
Numbered Headings in Paper:
This written essay is a response to the following questions. Students must create numbered headings (include the question or a summary phrase) for each section:
Section 1:
– What are at least two key assertions made by each of these articles? And, for each article, do you agree with the assertions? Explain why you agree or why
you disagree or partially agree. If you feel a point or assertion is missing in an article, what would you add? Use examples if needed to support your points.
Section 2:
-What are two themes that the articles have in common related to how a leader can best influence and persuade others?
Section 3:
-What are specific, actionable outcomes of the reading for you? In other words, what precisely would you like to do or improve upon or put into practice based on these readings?
Section 4:
-Based on what you have read, what is one area that you or others around you at work are missing and failing to harness for influence and persuasion?
Structure and Style:
Position Papers have a cover page, references page, and written narrative of no less than three pages. The student is strongly encouraged to keep the Turnitin “similarity index” below 20%. All papers must adhere to the APA writing guidelines found in the syllabus and clarified through the APA writing style at: http://www.apastyle.org/
Students are also encouraged to include additional resources when they feel that additional support is needed to reinforce their point, the author’s point, or refute the article’s premise.
Grading Rubrics:
The following rubrics will be applied in the grading process for each paper:
1. Did the student follow the APA formatting and structure of the paper?
2. Did the student answer each question and use the prescribed headings and additional research articles where requested?
3. Did the student apply critical thinking and their perspective on the messages in the article and go in-depth and support their assertions?
4. Did the student use correct grammar, punctuation, and writing mechanics?
