ntroduction
Cell communication is an extremely important concept in cellular function and is a key component to the success and survival of multicellular organisms.
Getting Started:
Sign up for a receptor or cell signaling pathway that uses one of the three mechanisms discussed in class. To sign up for a pathway, click on Tools tab, and then Groups (up to 3 students may choose the same topic).
Discussion Instructions:
Your discussion post will consist of the following:
Create a diagram that illustrates the pathway. This can be completed in any of the following ways: concept map, flow chart, diagram, drawing, video, computer graphics, recorded presentation (no more than 2 minutes). You must explain your pathway, the proteins involved, the signal being sent and the cellular response using any of the methods above that you feel most comfortable with. You may NOT give a written report or paragraph. You may not submit a picture that you find on the internet. The diagram must be your own creation. The pathway must be explained visually and should clearly show the three stages of cell signaling: Initiation, Transduction, and Cellular Response.
After creating the diagram, answer the following questions in your post as a single thorough paragraph (5-6 complete sentences):
Classify the receptor as enzyme-linked receptor, G-protein coupled receptor, or ligand-gated ion channel.
Determine the pathway/process the receptor is responsible for initiating.
What is the general function of the pathway (what does it do for the cell)?
If your pathway were to no longer function, what would happen to the cell? (Be specific)
Describe any disease associated with the pathway of your choice.
Make sure all your work contains citations in MLA format.
Reply to two other classmates with a meaningful contribution, as part of your grade.
