a. Discuss how your perceived proficiency level in informatics compared to your TANIC Self-Assessment responses.
In comparing my perceived proficiency level in informatics to my TANIC Self-Assessment responses, I rated myself as competent and proficient in most areas. However, upon further reflection, I realized that there were certain areas where I may have overestimated my proficiency. For instance, I was protecting my personal computer and email from scams. Identifying phishing the assessment revealed that I could improve, and I can improve these too.
b. Describe two competencies identified as strengths.
Two competencies that I consider myself a strength are first using a personal computer or a health information system (HIS) in scenarios such as using text and editing, uploading and downloading files, opening and closing basic applications, installing and uninstalling, and copying and pasting between files, among other things.
c. Describe two competencies identified as growth opportunities.
I identified two competencies as growth opportunities: protecting my personal computer and email from scams and phishing. Phishing attacks have surged due to the shift towards online activities during the COVID-19 pandemic, posing heightened cyber security risks. Remote work has made employees more susceptible to phishing emails, as described (Khezri & Abdekhoda, 2019). Their study revealed that participants struggled to recognize modern phishing emails while remaining vigilant to spelling errors and unusual requests for sensitive information. The findings underscore a lack of confidence in existing protective measures against phishing, highlighting society’s vulnerability to these attacks.
d. Describe at least two strategies to enhance your competencies.
The two strategies to enhance my competencies are: First, I will pay attention to clues for scams and protect my accounts by using multi-factor authentication. Some accounts offer extra security by requiring the user to have two or more credentials to log in to your account. This is called multi-factor authentication. The Federal Trade Commission. (2022, September) described in their article a strategy that I will use which is to follow these indications to suggest that the email may be a scam, despite its appearance resembling a familiar company and incorporating the company’s logo in the header:
– The email starts with a generic greeting.
– It claims your account is suspended due to a billing issue.
– It prompts you to click a link to verify or update your payment information.
e. Identify resources to support your selected strategies.
According to the Federal Trade Commission. (2022, September) the best strategies to protect ourselves and our accounts is by implementing the following strategies: Use Two-factor Authentication to Protect my account. There is an authenticator app in which some accounts let you use an authenticator app on your phone or tablet to verify it’s me trying to log in. Several authenticator apps exist, such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and Duo.
