Assignment Summary
Develop 4 sea-creature designs.
2 of these should be constructed from contour line.
2 of these should be constructed from solid shape.
Depict your chosen creature from a variety of scales and angles.
The designs should be balanced, and in black and white.
Submit your finished pieces in .jpg format to “Assessments > Assignments > Assignment 3 (Sea Creature Designs).” Please use the following naming convention:
lastname-orca.jpg (replace “orca” with the name of your chosen animal)
Detailed Overview
Start by choosing a sea-creature you’d like to depict! Options include, but aren’t limited to:
Sea Turtle
Octopus
Shark
Jellyfish
Seahorse
Orca
Manta Ray
Nautilus
Once you’ve selected a subject, search online for some reference photos. These will help you to depict your chosen animal accurately. Then, begin constructing your 4 designs. 2 of these should be primarily constructed from contour line, and the remaining 2 from solid shape. The subject should be represented from a variety of scales and angles, with small hints of detail to make it more identifiable. Please limit your use of color to black and white.
You may create these designs digitally, or using a traditional medium such as graphite drawing or painting. If you choose to go the traditional route, you’ll need to photograph or scan your completed work for submission. Please avoid using AI image generators for this project.
If using Photoshop, consider the following process:
Download the .psd template available in the content section of D2L, and open it with the program. Next, overlay a variety of black and white shapes (via the shape tools) to construct your sea-creatures. Use fills for the shape-focused designs, and strokes for the line focused designs. If you have access to a drawing tablet, you might alternatively try using the brush tool.
As you work, be sure to save your images in a .psd format (to preserve your layers and image quality).
Please submit files in .jpg format, using the following naming convention: last name, and the name of your sea creature. For example:
pierzchala-mantaray.jpg
If submitting multiple files, add a number to the end of the filename, before the extension:
pierzchala-shark1.jpg
pierzchala-shark2.jpg
pierzchala-shark3.jpg
pierzchala-shark4.jpg
Then, upload your work to D2L under “Assessments > Assignments > Assignment 3 (Sea Creature Designs).”
