You will watch a 20-minute video and read an article. In total, you should write (at least a) 3-page double-spaced summary/commentary that covers both the article and the video. I imagine, maybe, a half page for the video, and 2-and-a-half pages for the article, but, whatever combination you like is fine provided you write at least 3 pages.
You will upload this assignment under Précis Paper 3 in Blackboard. It is due next Thursday night/Friday morning.

You will first watch a video by John Oliver, the British-American comedian, on legal immigration.
Although he is a comedian, and includes weird jokes and lots of profanity, he provides among the very best short overviews of many current political controversies.
This video will give you a sense of the current legal status of immigration in the United States.

Second, you will read a detailed article “The Case for Immigration” by Matthew Yglesias, a well-known journalist and political analyst. He also has his degree in philosophy from Harvard.

The article was written when Trump was still president but all the issues remain relevant.
The article, although meant for a general audience, is long and detailed. In general a good strategy for reading longer material is to first skim all the major headings, then skim the article. This allows you to get your bearings. And then you need to read it slowly and carefully–taking notes along the way.
When you write your summaries, a good audience to have in mind is a smart friend of yours who hasn’t read the article. What are the main points and arguments?
