Essay Options 1 and 2 Week 8
So, true love. I have two ideas
from which you may choose one to write about.
1.    (pick this option) One
of you wrote a paper in which she analyzed the love song sung by Megara, the
lead female in “Hercules.” In it, she sings about not wanting to confess her
love for Hercules. Although she is not considered a member of the Disney
princess group, she is occasionally included. She is the only female character
to actively fight her love for a man. However, we do see some hesitation on the
part of other characters. Belle, for example, sings that her growing feelings
for the Beast are alarming. (At the moment I can’t recall Tiana’s reaction to
her feelings.)  What I would like you to
do, is to compare the Disney depiction of when a male and character discover
they are falling in love to its corresponding fairy tale. For example, in the
Beaumont version of “Beauty and the Beast,” Beauty has fallen in love with a
man who comes to her in a dream and struggles between her passionate love for
him and the way that the Beast treats her. She has a talk with her father in
which he encourages to marry the Beast. In the original “The Little Mermaid,”
the relationship between Ariel and the prince is quite different from the
Disney version, as are the types of love. What caused Ariel’s hesitation in the
fairytale? What sacrifices did she make for love?

2.     Over
the course of the summer, you have read and watched many versions of princess
fairy tales that represented love, romance and desire from the 1500s oral
tales, the 1800s written versions of those tales, and in the films of the
Disney Company from 1937 to the present.  In what ways do you see
cultural context of different periods shaping romance and marital expectations?
Was true love part of relationships described in the original stories? A part
of arranged marriages? Based on comparisons you have already seen between fairy
tales and their corresponding film versions, in what ways has Disney changed
ideas about romance, love and marriage to fit American ideals and expectations?
Be sure to reference specific stories (and use a reading to support your perspective).
