Purpose of the assignment:
For this essay, you will be asked to identify a problem and propose a solution. You will integrate research from a variety of sources and use this research to advance your argument.
Purpose of the paper:
For the problem/solution argument, the problem must be something that you are familiar with and directly affects you, but is not a personal problem. Make sure that you clearly define the problem and provide adequate proof that this problem needs to be addressed. Your solution to this problem should also be supported with evidence, and it should be realistic – something that can be accomplished.
Steps to begin brainstorming:
What is the problem? Why is this a problem?
Who does the problem affect? How does it affect them?
Why should this issue be addressed?
Have there been attempts to solve this problem before? Why did these attempts fail?
What is the proposed solution? Why will this solution solve/improve this problem?
Basic Guidelines:
Your essay must have a clear, argumentative thesis statement in the introduction which responds to the prompt.
The body of the essay needs to develop and support the claim you articulate in your thesis.
In your analysis, strive for depth rather than breadth. In other words, say a lot about one or two key things rather than a little bit about many things.
The closing portion of your essay needs to do more than merely restate the key ideas you’ve discussed in the body of your text. For example, consider a conclusion that speculates on the impact of the argument in the larger context of the subject area or topic being discussed.
