You will need to choose an indigenous culture that is not part of North America. You can get a list of indigenous cultures from around the world by clicking here Link
The first section of the paper is the introduction. The introduction should be one page long. This should include the following information: 1. name of tribe 2. brief history of the culture (how long have they existed and highlight 1 or 2 things that changed them dramatically throughout time. 3. Describe the geography of where they live. 4. Name 2-3 verbal codes 5. name 2-3 nonverbal codes 6. describe 2-3 cultural components of the culture (cultural components can range from food, fashion, religions, rites of passage, beliefs, music, dance, and etc…)
Sections 2-5 will prompt you to apply a GLOBE taxonomy component to the culture. You will do this four times. This means you will choose four taxonomy components from Globe to apply to the culture and analyze their cultural norms/practices. Each of these sections should be about a paragraph each. State clearly whether they are high, mid, or low. Provide your reasoning behind this claim. Last provide 1-3 examples that support your claim + reasoning.
Here is a sample:
Uncertainty Avoidance
When we look to the Uighurs in China we can clearly see that they are high on the uncertainty avoidance taxonomy component because they have strict rules that are followed throughout their culture. There are two examples, I observed, to support my claim.
First is in their religion: They follow a strict Muslim dogma. They have very strict rules, which decrease uncertainty. They like to live by a set of rules. Life is predictable. When an individual continually defies these rules they risk being ex-communicated. Their religion is very sacred to their way of life and sets the foundation for thier social and political participation. Uighurs also have a strong sense of community and stick together. They create close relationships, which also aids in decreasing uncertainty.
Second is in the political involvement: They do not trust the Chinese government at all. They believe that the government has targeted them for their religion. As a result, the attempt to avoid uncertainty with the government and all public entities on a consistent basis. For example, some Uighur families opt to home-school their children because they do not trust the curriculum of the Chinese government. Their feelings toward the government are not without merit. There have been numerous attacks on their culture and it is very hard for Uighur to get a job. The Chinese government forced them to put their culture on the identification cards, which has led to rampant discrimination from employers and police.
– You will do this four times for your report.
– Please NOTE that you will have to provide in text citations while you write your taxonomy components. I will take points off if you do not have in text citations done.
The last section is where you list your works cited page in APA format. For those of you who need assistance with APA format, I recommend utilizing Purdue Owl APA online, it is the best free online resource for citations. You can Google it.
RESEARCH
1. You will need to have five credible source citations from three different sources.
You must conduct visual research for this report. This means watch a cultural documentary. Find a documentary done on your indigenous culture
Books. I recommend looking for cultural anthropology books. Cultural Anthropologists study a group for a long time and publish their observations on the culture. This is your best resource, of all.
Interviews. Find interviews that were given with the indigenous. This allows you to hear their perspective, which is important in order to stay away from assumptive knowledge.
News Accounts. In depth news reports will be conducted on groups.
News Papers/Articles. The group may have made the news for a variety of reasons. A lot of cultural groups are making the news due to climate change. Three indigenous cultures, for example, have had to completely relocate because their land is now under water.
Use YOUTUBE!!!! Youtube is your friend during the research process. You will find videos, documentaries, interviews and so on. The following is a list of Youtube stations that feature documentaries on culture
The Documentary Network
Smithsonian
National Geographic
Vice News Culture
BBC News Culture
Planet Doc
New Atlantis
2. You are required to have at least two citations in the introduction and one citation per taxonomy component.
3. You may use the textbook or my lecture to cite from
4. Cite sources in APA format both in text citations and works cited page citations. Again, I recommend using Purdue Owl APA as free online citation guide. You can Google it.
FORMATTING AND GRAMMAR
1. Proofread your responses. You are allowed one grammar error per section.
2. Use vivid, descriptive language. Especially, when providing examples. More detail is better than less detail.
3. Historical context should be provided where appropriate.
4. Each component should be accompanied by an example like I illustrated in my sample answer.
5. Works Cited Page should be included at the end of the report.
6. Please section off your paper. Each section should have a subtitle beginning with the “Introduction.” You will want to title the subsequent sections after the cultural taxonomy component that you chose.
You will need to choose an indigenous culture that is not part of North America.
