Lifespan
development has so many interesting areas.  As I age, my focus is shifting
somewhat; partially because I am a caretaker of my aging mother and because I
am in my fifties. There are stereotypes in the workforce that are frustrating
for me, my mother’s circle of influence has become much smaller, and most
importantly for me is how do I maintain sharp cognitive abilities as I grow
older. The two article I chose to review relate to these areas of interest.
Brain reserve,
resilience, and cognitive stimulation across the lifespan
This article
details some interventions that are possible against the biological processes
of aging. The authors assess evidence for strategies that could expand human
health span and possibly lifespan through medical or lifestyle intervention
(Sorond & Gorelick, 2023). This is consistent with what occurs with
biological and environmental processes over the lifespan that mold development
as well as aging and, on the importance of integrating scientific research and
health strategies in everyday life to improve quality of live as we age
(Broderick & Blewitt, 2020).
Understanding the
factors contributing to suicide among the geriatric population: A narrative
review
This article
focuses on the causes for higher occurring instances of suicide among our aging
population. This research centers on the psychological, social, and biological
reasons for suicidal ideation and behavior to occur in the geriatric population
(Dhole et al., 2023). This is shown in the textbook where Erikson’s stages of
psychosocial development model are reviewed focusing on the challenges of
integrity vs. despair stage (Broderick & Blewitt, 2020). This article also
addresses targeted interventions and preventive measures.
