When
reflecting on the videos watched over the term, one of the prominent
characteristics of human service professionals is their ability to cover
multiple task related services within their agencies. This was evident in week
2 when we viewed the Central Virginia Community Services interview. This
is further explained by Martin (2022), that human services professionals are
skilled in a variety of tasks related within their area of expertise. A second
prominent characteristic is to continue to practice with integrity, be
professional, and accountable. This is outlined in the Ethical Standards for
Human Services Professionals (2024). It is also voiced in the Central
Virginia Community Services interview, when asked about characteristics of
human services professionals that do well in their agency. Finally, another
prominent characteristic of human service professionals is the ability to find
joy in their work, despite the challenges. In each of the videos, the
interviewee was questioned about their feelings towards the work they did. Each
of them appeared sincere and stayed focused on their mission to bring the best
of care to the population they serviced. Mark 10:45 says, “For even the Son of
man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a
ransom for many”.
We
covered education, working with children, families, the elderly, and all people
that need support. In the interview with Dennis Dean (module 4) being aware of
various cultures was mentioned. Cultural competency is a prominent
characteristic of a human service professional I would like to grow in. Most
people are not aware that Anchorage Alaska, my home for over twenty-five years,
has a healthy mix of cultures. In working with people from various cultures, as
a human service professional, it would be a disservice were I not to research
and ask questions to better understand the individuals I work with. Asking
people direct questions about their life, going out into their community, and
doing research to find out more about them will help to broaden my knowledge of
the individuals I work with. Matthew 22: 37 says “Jesus said unto him,
Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and all thy soul, and with
all thy mind. Matthew 22:39 says, “This is the first and great commandment. “
It is
necessary for human service workers to have these characteristics as we are
charged with the responsibility to put forth our best efforts when supporting
individuals and communities (Martin, 2022). Galatians 6:2 says, “Bear ye one
another’s burden, and so fulfil the law of Christ.”
