Much thought and time is given to developing a strong mission, vision, and values of an organization communicates to stakeholders what the organization is truly about. The mission statement will clearly define the organization’s purpose. The vision will be inspiration, explaining why we do what we do. A value statement will hold the team together, explaining the beliefs within the organization (Olsen, 2023).
The mission, vision, and value statements influence the creation of the business plan. The business plan should relay the goals and objectives to stakeholders. The mission, vision, and value statements combined fully share the goals and objectives of the organization. In addition, the mission, vision, and value statements together create an image of strategy; ultimately the business plan relays the strategy for success to anyone who reads the business plan.
For me personally, I believe you should choose to work for an organization whose mission, vision, and values closely align with your mission. While your mission may not be 100% in sync with any company’s, I believe that having some alignment will lead you to be happier where you work because your work will have a purpose. This is extra important in some places more than others. An extreme example would be working in a church; working in a church that has core values different than your personal beliefs will continuously lead to discontentment; meanwhile, this may not be as important while working at a paper company. At my current employer Greystar, I believe in the mission of the organization as it’s pretty generic; where I find more alignment is in the vision of the company as we use company profits to improve the lives of staff and benefit charities.
