Taking Action Professional Presentation Instructions
Now that you’ve finished the assigned readings for this module, hopefully you have a better idea of how a nurse might take action in the community where they live. Maybe the Taking Action chapter you chose to read inspired you or made you think a bit deeper about issues in your own community. This week you will identify an issue from your own community or state that you feel strongly about and share it in a presentation to your peers on the course discussion board.
To get started, think about the chapter you chose to read and/or the priority areas identified in Healthy People 2030 (LINK):  https://health.gov/healthypeople
and how those areas can contribute to health. Things like the environment, clean water, green spaces, safety, nutrition, housing, etc. all affect wellbeing and health outcomes. Listen to your local news or look at your local news websites if you’re having trouble identifying an issue. What resonates with you?
How can you be more prepared to advocate for this issue? The American Nurses Association (ANA) represents all nurses in the U.S. and advocates for many issues.
https://www.nursingworld.org/practice-policy/health-policy/health-system-reform/
Their website has resources that may help you engage in advocacy as you learn to share your voice. On their website (listed below) there are links to different resources for you to look over. Find one that supports the identified issue in your community (See below for an example). When we feel strongly about something or passionate about an issue, and we have resources to support us, we’re more likely to do something about it, or Take Action.

If I were to discuss rural healthcare disparities in my state, information found on the ANA Health System Transformation site supports removing barriers and restrictions from APRN practice so they may practice to their full scope in all communities. I might choose to discuss additional information found on the ANA Health Policy site regarding health IT and the potential of virtual/telehealth access to reduce these rural health disparities. I may then choose to discuss how I can write a letter to my legislator or speak at a committee meeting supporting more access to virtual/telehealth services in our rural towns and counties.
