THIS METHODOLOGICAL WRITING SHOULD ENCOMPASS THE FOLLOWING:
Be in the format/form(s) you want to write in—you can use multiple forms and a combination of these forms (academic essay, poetry, pictures/maps, interview format, zines, sculpture, etc.); BE SURE TO SUBMIT A STATEMENT THAT EXPLAINS WHAT FORM YOU CHOSE, HOW THE METHODS OF THAT FORM ENABLED YOU TO DO A DIFFERENT WORK, AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO DO IT THIS WAY. If this explanation cannot be included in the form of writing you choose to do your paper in, then you need to include a separate brief statement (2-3 pages) that answers the above and remember to include citations;
Proper Chicago Manual of Style “Author-Date in-text” citations, quick guide is located in “Citations and Writing Tips” (be sure to cite ideas as well as quotes) and a works cited page- remember even with a map or a picture or zine there is still a citation practice! If the citations do not flow with your format, provide a separate sheet with the works cited page with your writing;
Grounded in the course readings and include a diversity of citations from the ENTIRE COURSE; it should be clear that you are articulating your methodological writing based on what we have done in the course all semester—include citations from readings, pictures, films, and/or lecture/discussions. You may include some outside materials for example purposes (readings from other classes, news media, films, art, conversations, etc.) but these should only be used to illustrate the method(s);
“Write” a clear argument about anti-oppressive and justice focused research methods are and what it means to be an anti-oppressive researcher—this means a clear and focused “statement” about anti-oppressive research methods (remember statements are not always “written in words”), what is your big statement about anti-oppressive research methods (WHAT);
Explicit discussion/illustration on which methods you are bringing together, what they mean, how they are used (explained by authors), and how they enable you to engage in anti-oppressive research and more just knowledge production, you do not need to discuss every method from the course but you should engage with more than two (HOW);
Discussion/illustration of the political stakes of anti-oppressive research methods—why are you bringing these particular methods together, what new questions or insights are possible when you do research work and assemble methods in this way, why is it significant for you to do it this way, why is anti-oppressive research important to you (WHY); and
You can approach the this Methodological Writing as:
addition to your revised previous papers with further explanation, use, and formats from the course materials; or
a radical rewrite of your “paper,” including constructing it in a different form.
AGAIN, the main point of the Methodological Writing is to engage and employ the research methods that have resonated most with you in whatever form that takes. This writing is a place for you to demonstrate what anti-oppressive research methods are, how they are practiced, and why it is important to be an anti-oppressive researcher as a Crime and Justice Studies major. Importantly, this final paper is what your anti-oppressive research methodological framework is, can be, and will continue to build to be!
