In the opening paragraph, introduce the context of the issue and the two opposing arguments (names of authors, their credentials, titles of articles, and in-text citations in MLA)
Include a thesis statement at the end of the first paragraph to state your purpose of the analysis essay
In the body paragraphs, first, briefly state the main ideas of each argument
Then, analyze the elements of their rhetorical situations in each argument,
such as purpose, audience, and stance.
After that, present the debate topic by topic, comparing and contrasting the
debaters’ presentation of each argument, including the argumentative
strategies and the kinds of evidence provided
Sequence the topics that you compare and contrast in a logical way
(most/least familiar to the reader or most/least complex to present)
Add topic sentences to introduce each paragraph to cue the reader of what
you will write about
Use cohesive devices such as “moreover,” “however,” and “in contrast” where
necessary
Refer to the authors by their last names after introducing their full names in
the first paragraph of your paper
Incorporate quotations and paraphrases from your chosen essays using signal phrases such as “according to” to introduce source materials. Read Chapter 50 (p. 551) for instructions. Documented sources with in-text citations
Include an MLA-style Work Cited page (see Chapter 53) that lists the essay you are analyzing. Use #30 on p. 596 (Work on a Website)
Avoid summarizing two chosen essays only without analyzing them. Refer to the items above, particularly 1-6
Strive to be fair and unbiased in analyzing the two specific opposing arguments and avoid analyzing opposing arguments in general
