June 26, 2024

Adapted from the United Nations
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United
Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and
prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart
are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call
for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global
partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must
go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce
inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and
working to preserve our oceans and forests.
Step 1:
• Focused on the course theme (CGEO702) and topics, you will choose
1 of the 17 trends/goals as identified on the United Nations
Sustainable Development Goals
• Please ensure that as you pick a trend/goal, it should be related to the
course topics on environment and sustainability
• Please use class time to consult with the instructor if you have
questions about your chosen trend/goal.

Once your trend/goal is chosen, you will collect “current” news articles, press releases, magazine
readings, news video (provide links or transcript), and other forms of printed and online media.
It is preferred that you collect media that can be captured onto your report (e.g., newspaper
article found online that can be extracted and submitted). Each “article” is considered to be a log
“entry”. Please make it easy for the instructor to read your articles.
a. The articles should be from a reputable and established source. Blogs and consultant
blogs do not really count.
b. The articles should be from the time period of roughly 2018 to Present time.
c. The articles should be covering news releases, trends, and updates on anything to do with
your retail trend topic.
d. The articles should be covering the 8 weeks timeframe since the beginning of this
assignment till submission date [you must have articles in this time period – quantity is
flexible]. You are expected to include current up-to-date information evolution of this
chosen topic in 2023-2024.
e. Your articles should offer a glimpse into the future state of this sustainable development
goal in Canada or the rest of the world, pertaining to YOUR TOPIC of choice.Step 3
Assemble all these NEWS-BASED articles in an organized fashion – you can organize it however you
want. Be creative, meaningful, and easy to follow. If it is an online article/news, please print it out.
There is no prescribed format here, but make sure you include a minimum of 20 different log
entries, covering a range of sources, media format, and perspectives on your topic. For instance, do
not submit all 20 articles from CP24, or The Toronto Star. Even different news outlet may originate
their sources from a central news agency (e.g. the Associated Press), so please be careful to
decipher the differences. At the beginning of the log book, please include a table of content with
the names of ALL articles/entries, date/year, and author(s).

etc.Step 4
You will be required to write a “REFLECTIVE PAPER” that coherently describe your topic, based on the log entries compiled. The log entries should support your paper/reflection, and not be treated as separate items. Think of this paper as addressing the past, present, and future state of your topic –
from the perspective of sustainable development. The paper should have these requirements:
Approximately 6-7 pages single spaced. Page count excludes cover/appendices. Single-space everything.
If you have external references beyond your articles, please cite them
