connections between the setting in the story and your life
what aspects of the setting puzzle or confuse you.

– rebirth and renewal come from death and endings
Evaluation Criteria:
1. Demonstrates a clear understanding of the element of setting by providing detailed observations on the location(s) and time period(s)the story is set.
2. Makes a connection between setting and the central idea or ideas of a story
3. Observations are backed up with quotes from the story.
4. Quotes are fully explained.
5. Journal contains very few grammatical, mechanical or fluency errors.
Additionally, but not mandatory:
1. Comments on what may be puzzling or confusing about the setting.
2. Makes connections between student’s own life experience and the setting of the story.
