The Research:
The outside sources can be any nonfiction essays of your choice. You may choose to use news articles, personal essays, research essays, academic articles from the DVC Library database, or any combination that relates to your topic. The outside essays may bring a new perspective on the topic, present a counter-argument to the assigned text(s), or provide an example that supports your claims. If you choose to cite news articles, your sources should be legitimate news outlets that adhere to journalistic standards. (Note that this does not mean that the source is unbiased; all writing has some form of bias.) I recommend news sites like The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Democracy Now, NPR, BBC, The Nation, The Atlantic, The Guardian, The Economist, etc. (You are not required to use these; they are simply suggestions.) It would be most helpful if your articles are in-depth rather than a few brief paragraphs. You may also use opinion pieces but be sure to be aware of the author’s intention.
The Formatting:
This essay will be in MLA format. This means it will be typed, double-spaced, in 12-point font (I prefer Times New Roman), with page numbers and your last name on each page, and a header on the first page. Your title should be original, and you must include a Works Cited page. Be sure to include in-text citations in the body of the essay. For my first essay, I have chosen the topic of “Free Palestine,” in which I will specifically examine the ongoing Gaza-Israel conflict and international relations that surround it. This is an extremely current and delicate subject of interest in light of the recent spike in death tolls and actions by world powers.
What are you going to write about?
I am going to write about the Gaza-Israel conflict, with a focus on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza itself, as well as what has happened historically between these two places throughout time leading up until now; additionally considering the various international perspectives concerning this matter. In this essay I plan on trying to understand where did it all start from? Who is directly involved? What are some consequences for civilians caught up within such conflicts entirely? So that we can know why they keep happening.
What examples will you use?
My supporting evidence will come from specific events cited either through news articles or academic papers published recently. For example, there may be reports from The New York Times or BBC among others, which could be used to educate classmates about what is currently happening over there at this very moment within those regions controlled by Hamas and also under Israeli occupation too; I might even call upon a historian who can help shed more light by referring back towards older writings such as books etcetera but also scholarly journals alongside other historical records so that we gain insight into how everything came about prior this stage. Moreover personal accounts on imposed restrictions should not miss out since they give us an opportunity see things differently putting ourselves shoes another person who has been affected by war like situation hence showing humanity even further.
How will you go about doing research?
Both primary and secondary sources shall form basis for my study. What will your main argument be?
My main argument is that the international community has a moral and political responsibility to support Palestinian cause push for peaceful settlement of Gaza-Israel conflict. I will emphasize on the point that this crisis was brought about by systemic injustice continuous aggression against people living there therefore more should be done by International actors at all levels starting with powerful states up to IOs who can play intermediary roles while protecting human rights for those affected most directly on ground. Through historical background information, current happenings personal stories shared I hope create interest among readers so they can understand why “Free Palestine” not just another slogan but rather an imperative need towards worldwide fairness.
