Objective
Using evidence quoted and paraphrased from the text, analyze and interpret the significance of one literary element in a work we’ve studied. This analysis should demonstrate knowledge of the elements and their relationships to other parts of the work. Thus, your essay must make and support a claim about one element we’ve studied, such as plot structure, symbol, or character.

As a general template, a thesis claim in this essay will use a literary element as subject and a strong verb expressing its action or activity:

Because of the essay’s focus on analysis of elements, the author, their intent, and their lives, become irrelevant, outside the scope of our work. Leave the author, their biography, and their intent aside.
Requirements:
A clear, substantive claim about the function, purpose, or use of the element examined.
Effective use of textual evidence in support of that claim.
Integration of quotes and paraphrases into explanatory sentences; quotes should not “hang.
MLA format and documentation, including the header on first page, title, in-text citations, and Works Cited page. Review specifics in the MLA section of the Mays textbook, and in the MLA section in the LCCC databases on the library’s page.
A minimum of 1000 words.
Clear, correct use of literary terms.
