Value: 20% of final grade
Length: 1000–1200 words (approximately four pages single-spaced)

Topic
The readings in Units 3 to 6 discuss the major developments in the four main sectoral areas of Canadian cultural policy: the arts, the cultural industries, heritage, and diversity issues. Please write a short essay on this topic, beginning with an account of challenges and successes in the past 60–70 years.
To begin, provide an introduction explaining which sector(s), in your opinion, faced the greatest challenges and which maintained the most stability during this period. Please explain the reasons for your assessment.
For the main section of your essay, focus on one of the four sectors. Explore the extent to which programs, funding, and regulatory and administrative measures have kept pace with developments in cultural policy. For instance, have programs and initiatives in the sector of arts policy adequately responded to the sector’s needs and to the public interest? Has regulation and funding been effective in meeting policy goals? Please feel free to include your own observations or experiences from any professional experience you may have.
Please support your arguments with examples. You may use graphic elements such as tables, images, lists, or timelines to convey data.
In your essay, draw upon at least six of the required and recommended readings. You must use one or two of the required readings from each unit and use the required readings to reach or exceed the total of six.
Bonus points: One bonus point will be given for an illustrative quotation directly from one of the government policy documents listed for each unit. Up to 5 bonus points.
Indicate your sources with (Author, p. x), and indicate policy sources with the name of the policy.
