June 14, 2024

This week we covered a lot of ground learning about political and economic change in Latin America during the 1945 to 2000 period, roughly speaking. For this 500-600 word 500-750 word paper, our goal will be to outline the processes of democratization and economic transition in a Latin American country of your choice. Essentially, tell their story about how the approach to governance and economic development changed over the 1945-2000 period. This is a very short paper, so you won’t be able to go into a whole lot of depth, but here’s what you need to do:
Choose a country in Latin America – Columbia
Identify and describe the kind of political regime and economic development approach (e.g., ISI, agroexport economy) the country had the beginning of the post-WWII/Cold War period.
Describe changes in the political regime for the country in the 1945-2000 period.
Did this country’s political regime change over the the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s?
Did the country experience a democratic transition in the 1980s/1990s?
Explain and describe key events and shifts. Use tables and information from the PowerPoint and your book to help you.
Describe changes to the country’s economic development approach in the 1945-2000 period.
Did the country change its economic development approach?
If so, what model did it adopt, when, and under what circumstances?
TIPS
I suggest making a timeline of changes. You do not have to talk about changes in government leadership, but rather we are looking for big shifts! If the country had a coup d’etat, for example, and changed from a democracy to a dictatorship or vice versa, that is a regime change. If the president changed via election, that is not regime change. Likewise for changes to the economic development model, we are looking for changes in the overall approach. Shifts from state-led to market-led approaches, for example, are what we are looking to document and describe.
You may need to do some additional research, depending on the country you choose and library is a great resource! Let me know if you need help finding information. I am happy to help you locate helpful sources in addition to your textbook.
Start your paper with an introduction that tells the reader exactly what your paper is about. Present your topic and then use language like “This paper will detail the major political and economic shifts in X country between 1945 and 2000.”
I am available to review rough drafts! You need to get it to me no later than midnight on Saturday to ensure I can get you feedback. I will review incomplete papers as well.
PAPER GUIDELINES:
The paper should be no less than 500 words and no more than 600 750 words. This is about 2-2.5 pages double-spaced.
