Let’s make sure that we put all the information we have learned together and be able to transform it.
Please read these instructions in their entirety. You want to make sure to take advantage of essential points.
Copyrights
Sharing, posting, or sending these instructions, the brochure, or the diagram I created is absolutely not allowed. I’ll share them with the world, but not quite yet. So please don’t do it before me.
Objectives
Recognize the importance of taking good notes
Identify the main points of the chapters covered
Reconstruct this information in your own words and explanation
Summarize the reconstruction
Self-assess your knowledge and performance in each Put-It-Together assignment.
Note: This assignment covers all the Module Objectives covered thus far in the first five modules (MO1.1-1.5, MO2.1-2.8, MO3.1-3.7, MO4.1-4.5, MO5.1-5.5)
Overview
Whether you plan to be in the medical field, academia, business, or another field, you must translate what you learn into information that will be transmitted to others. And most of the time, you will only have time to explain some things. That’s why the idea of this assignment is to build on that skill: communication.
You might wonder why I didn’t open the assignment before. Science education shows us that we remember the information for longer (i.e., learn) when we:
Space out our studying
Rephrase concepts using our own words
Explain topics to others.
Chapters that need to be covered
The following are the chapters that need to be covered:
Chapter 4: Single-Gene Inheritance
Chapter 6: Matters of Sex
Chapter 8: Genetics of Behavior
Chapter 13: Chromosomes
Chapter 18: The Genetics of Identity
Time
You should plan 90-120 min to complete this Put-It-Together and the self-grading analysis. After all, this assignment replaces exams, and that’s the time devoted to exams in classes that require exams. However, you don’t need to complete it in one sitting. Creativity and connections sometimes happen when we step away from work for a bit.
Get Your Notes
Extracting information from the source is something you should always do. That’s taking notes. Now, we’re going to use those notes. Need to have them organized? Take the time to collect them before getting into action. Need a suggestion? Here are a few: https://www.csum.edu/university-advising/media/effective-note-taking-strategies.pdf
Get Into Action: The Hardcore Instructions
Step 1 – Select a question to answer per chapter.
For each chapter, select one of the questions below. It can be a different question for each chapter:
1. What didn’t you know that you now know?
2. What is your favorite concept of this chapter?
3. What was the most shocking topic of this chapter?
Step 2 – Answer the question.
Please answer the question as you would explain it to a friend or family. Don’t answer like, “My favorite topic is autosomal dominance.” Nope. That’s to guide your post. It should look like “Autosomal dominance is…”, “Autosomal dominance has…”, or “Have you ever wondered/thought why/what/how…” Therefore, you must explain the concept.
Option 1: 300-character limit of your explanation.
Option 2: Create a 100-character, very catchy title for the post’s front slide and a 700-character limit explanation for the post’s caption. It can’t miss the title or full points off!
Everything is a limitation of characters, including spaces!
And you can mix: some chapters with option 1, the others with option 2, or all option 1, or all option 2. It’s up to you.
Is ChatGPT or other AI allowed? Yes, but you need to include screenshots of your interaction with ChatGPT and a rationale.
Step 3 – One document
One document for all answers. Please add a heading to identify the chapter.
What to Submit
Submit through Canvas as *doc, *docx, or *txt.
With your permission, I’ll highlight your responses on social media. So, you’re genuinely explaining the concepts to an audience 😊
You will also be submitting your self-assigned grade.
Grading
Remember to assign yourself a grade!
Please remember that hard work doesn’t equal high performance or good grades. Your work should reflect that.
If there’s a discrepancy between your grade and mine, I’ll provide comments explaining why the grade differs. If you think you’re doing great in the real world, but the numbers and evaluations suggest otherwise, you should step up or explore alternatives. This assignment helps you gauge your actual performance and self-reflection skills.
