Early identification and prompt treatment of postpartum depression is vital. One source cited that depression is a serious disorder that affects 19% of all new mothers and up to 37% of low-income mothers. Depressed women are more likely than non-depressed women to use drugs or alcohol, smoke, have poor nutritional habits, and are less likely to adhere to postpartum care regimens. In children, the negative effects may be long lasting (especially if not treated early in the mother). PPD makes it difficult to be a responsive parent.

Compare and contrast “Baby Blues”, PPD and Postpartum Psychosis
Analyze the risk factors, causes and Signs/Symptoms of PPD
Evaluate how PPD affects the newborn & the child as they grow
Discuss complementary care/community/collaborative resources and medication available.
Describe what questions the nurse/HCP would ask to determine if PPD is present and a tool used to screen for PPD
All students answer the following:
Explain in detail how a professional nurse can do to help moms suffering from PPD feel better
Detail who should be responsible for PPD screening: Is it the professional nurses’ responsibility to screen for PPD (the Birthing Center nurse – prior to discharge from the hospital; or the office nurse; or who should be responsible for screening.
