More Suppose our language was used in some piece of audio or audiovisual media (film, radio program, TV show, video game, music album, etc.). What impressions, emotions, or feelings would you expect it to trigger in people hearing it for the first time? What aspects of the language do you think contribute to those impressions, emotions, or feelings? How/why do those aspects influence audience impressions, emotions, or feelings? In addition to making your claim clear and explicit, you must explain why you’re making your claim, and provide concrete evidence in support of your claim. For example, you might think that the audience might feel relaxed when they hear the language. You can say that you think this because the language has a very smooth, gentle, flowy sound, as evidenced by an abundance of alveolar fricatives like [s] and [ʃ] and approximants like [ɹ] in the words (give examples), which might be reminiscent of a gentle breeze or flowing water. These sounds give an impression of a gentle, elegant, and kind speaker, adding to the relaxing feeling that audiences might feel.
This form of the question is actually *quite* difficult. I don’t want something like “they would be confused” or “they would love it.” I also don’t want something like “They would be impressed that movie creators can create a whole functioning language for a fictional world.” I also do not want a discussion about the way our language looks in IPA transcription or about spelling. As I’ve mentioned previously, we don’t have a writing system for our language, so saying “they would be confused by all the weird symbols” doesn’t answer the prompt.
What I do want is for you to comment as specifically as you can what people’s reactions would be (e.g., fear, happiness, anxiety, relaxation, surprise, etc.) and then use our linguistic terminology to explain why, in specific terms.
Here are things you should look for when evaluating your essay:
Does it talk about specifics of our language (e.g., specific word choices in our lexicon, specific details about the morphological structure, specific details about the inventory)?
Does it describe specific, detailed impressions that someone would have? Does it explain WHY someone would have those impressions?
Do those impressions relate directly to the language specifics you discuss?
Is it an essay? Is it clear, organized, and convey a cohesive point?
