Poetry Analysis Essay
Assignment
Task: Submit to complete this assignment
Due July 7 at 11:59 PM
Directions: Choose TWO of the poems from the assigned poems in our poetry module and write an essay comparing the two poems. You should use the devices we have discussed in this module AND in module 1 to explain how these devices affect the meanings of the poems and how they connect, share similarities and/or how they differ.
For example:
You can compare two poems by examining the narrators, tone, form or structure, language use, characters, metaphor, theme, or any other devices or methods for examining poems that we have used or not used in class.
*Each paragraph should include analysis of both poems to show how they compare. For example if you are comparing “Going Back” and “Insect Life of Florida” each paragraph should contain quotes and explanations from BOTH poems to demonstrate how they utilize a literary device or the form, narrators and characters, etc.
For this assignment, you will:
Develop a strong, clear thesis statement that summarizes the basis of your comparison. Your thesis statement should answer this question: How do these poems connect?
Explain your ideas about the poem in a well-organized essay. Compose body paragraphs that effectively support your comparison of the poems. Consider the poem’s speaker, audience, setting, plot, structure, imagery, diction, language, tone, sounds, rhythms, etc.
If pertinent, you may want to consider possible objections and alternative interpretations and respond to them.
Check that you have an introduction that charts your key points and makes obvious your thesis.
Check that you have a conclusion that brings closure to your essay. You should be able to explain a reason why these poems are worth comparing, besides that they were assigned 😊
Use support from the poems in the form of direct quotes throughout your essay.
Proofread for grammar, spelling, word choice, wordiness, transitions, sentence structure, verb tense, academic tone (for example, avoid slang and contractions), length, and following assignment directions.
Compose a creative, compelling title that communicates to your audience what your essay is about.
Write a minimum of 800 words
Utilize third person point of view (avoid I and you)
Utilize MLA format and include in-text citations and a separate works cited page that includes the poem and any other sources you incorporated or consulted.
*You will do a series of prewriting steps, including an outline, and a revision summary. This DropBox is for the final version of your essay
