1. Choose one of the following topics that you read about in Chapter 8 of the Vanden and Prevost textbook for this week:
* individualism and politics
* Political parties and conflict
* political pacts
* personalism and politics
* strongman/caudillos
* golpe de estado/coup d’etats
* juntas
* corporatism
* clientelism
* jeito
2. Search for scholarly articles on the topic you chose in Latin America or in a specific Latin American country using either Google ScholarLinks to an external site.
or Academic Search PremierLinks to an external site.
. Choose an article with full text access (meaning you can access and read the entire article). Make sure the article discusses Latin American politics in the region or in a specific country. Some of the articles may be in Spanish or Portuguese. Feel free to choose an article written in another language.
* For Google Scholar, use search terms like: personalism politics Latin America or juntas Latin America
* For Academic Search Premier, you will need to enter one term in per field. So, you might put personalism in the first field and Latin America in the second field.
3. Read the article you chose and write a 500-600 word paper that does the following:
* Summarizes what the article was about and what you learned from it about the topic you chose.
* Discusses how the article helped you to understand political culture and/or democratization better in Latin America.
* Identifies a quote from the article that stood out to you or you found particularly interesting and explains why you chose the quote.
** For the paper, I suggest writing about a paragraph for each of the bulleted points above.
Paper Guidelines:
* Remember to cite your sources in the text of your paper using parenthetical citations. Include a citation at the end of each sentence that contains a fact that is not considered “common knowledge,” for ideas or theories of the author or another person cited in the source, statistical data, whenever you are paraphrasing a portion of text, or when you are quoting word-for-word.
* Use CMOS Author-Date to correctly reference course materials in your paper. Check out the CMOS Author-Date Cheat Sheet to help you, which is available on the Modules page. Papers with no in-text citations will not be accepted. They will be returned to you for revision.
* In addition to the article you discuss, you are encouraged to draw on your textbook and other academic and/or reputable sources in your analysis. No online encyclopedias or similar sources (e.g., History.com, Britannica.com, etc.).
