This study investigates the complex dynamics of how individuals change their travel decisions in response to the information available either through the internet, social network, or mouth-to-mouth. In a time when information dissemination is boarder and faster than ever, it is vital to understand these processes, particularly as society moves toward promoting sustainable transportation options like carsharing, bike sharing, and electric vehicles. Given the fast pace of technological advancements in transportation, grasping the factors that prompt shifts toward these alternatives is of paramount importance.
At the core of this investigation is the application of Agent-Based Modeling (ABM), a computational technique that models the interactions within a network of autonomous agents. Each agent in the ABM framework operates according to a predefined set of rules and behaviors, engaging with others in a manner that can produce complex behaviors and emergent phenomena. This methodological approach is chosen for its potential to elucidate the collective dynamics that result from individual decisions regarding travel, under the influence of disseminated information. The primary objective of this study is to incorporate ABM as a methodology framework to simulate and analyze the mechanisms in which information influences individual and collective travel behavior changes toward sustainable transportation alternatives.
Additionally, this study also aims to explore the diffusion of information within various social network structures and through different media types. By understanding how information propagates through networks of agents, the study expects to gain insights that could refine the effectiveness of policy interventions and marketing strategies aiming to foster a transition toward more sustainable modes of travel.
Ultimately, by gaining a deeper understanding of the processes underlying the diffusion of information and its impact on travel behaviors, this research anticipates contributing valuable insights that could enhance the efficacy of measures designed to promote sustainable transportation alternatives. Through this exploration, the study aims to provide a comprehensive framework for policymakers and marketers to implement more informed and effective strategies for fostering a shift towards environmentally friendly travel options.
