Reponse Post 1: Cultural fluency can benefit a person’s self-awareness by allowing them to understand the cultural difference between their cultural and one that they may encounter. Being fluent in the other cultures would allow a person to reflect on their actions prior to execution, preventing potential cultural conflict. I can also help one’s self-awareness by helping people understand their own cultural bias and see if they tend to lump people into a one-story narrative. A person could use their cultural fluency for example in a Muslim country or even an area where there are Muslim people. During the time of Ramadan Muslims cannot eat or drink during the day. Out of respect for them culturally one may decide to refrain from doing this in front of them.
In situations where there is different concept of time these can be frustrated. I have had to deal with this once I got out of the military. In the military 15 minutes prior was on time and not early. I have always had to be early to the early and it is engrained in every aspect of my soul. In the region that I now work now that I am out of the military, they view time very differently. Quite often on time means 30 minutes later. Understanding that this is the norm within the culture allows me to not get upset by this fact. I am still early to the initial time, due to the internal anxiety it would cause me, but knowing the lax time standard on the other part, prevents conflict.
Reponse Post 2: I would like to think that I have tons of self awareness when it comes to cultural fluency, and it times they go hand in hand. Its not that hard for me to realize that every single person is living their own life with tons of factors that have influenced them since they were even a child. Everyone is raised a different way and its okay to be different then others, thats one of the things that make humanity so special. Just respecting where people come from and what they believe in is something that a lot of people today just don’t do and I don’t understand why.
Some cultures have strict time management where they have to do certain tasks before they can do what they enjoy and other cultures are more of a go at your own pace and find what you enjoy and then takeoff with it. In school I thinks its important to try to get on the same time management schedule that your instructor wants. While in a social setting however its okay to say no to your friends if they want to stay out late and things like that if its going to effect your schedule the next day. like I said everyone is in their own head living their own life and a lot of the time you are thinking more about what your doing and how your acting then they are if that makes sense.
