Value: 25 points, 25% of the grade
Directions : Answer each of the essay questions below using information from the course readings, films, and lectures. Since this exam is an evaluation of your understanding of course materials, you may not use sources that are not on the syllabus or Blackboard. Since this is a take-home exam, I expect your answers to be thoughtful, detailed, and thorough. A successful answer will use evidence from the sources to back up your claims.
Format: Send your exam as a single, word-processed document (*.doc, *.docx, or *.pdf—NOT *.pages or a link to a google doc). Each essay should be at least 1.5 pages long in standard academic format (double-spaced, 12-point font, 1” margins). You do not need to include a bibliography, but you must identify the author and title of any reading and the title of any film you refer to in your essay. (This information is in the syllabus; so I expect you to use it). Be sure to proofread your exam.
Instances of plagiarism or cheating will result in a “zero” for the exam and will be reported to the department chair and the dean.
1. Based on two sources from the syllabus, what kinds of challenges do women and men with disabilities face in “doing” gender? How are these challenges further complicated by race, class, and gender?
2. In American society, men are encouraged to avoid femininity and women are encouraged to embrace both masculinity and femininity. Using examples from three course sources, discuss this statement and explain whether it’s true of other cultures.
3. Throughout the semester, we’ve seen that gender identity is not completely a question of individual choice. Choose two course readings and one personal example and discuss how gender is managed and controlled by the state and its institutions
