Upon the heels of the Civil War, the civil rights movement fought for social equality and social justice. The equal protection clause of the fourteenth amendment is an important citizen protection of civil rights. Elizabeth Segal describes social justice as a component of civil rights. (Segal, 2015). Social justice was established to ensure people of society are treated fairly and equally. This allows the same basic rights, opportunities, and benefits for all. Social justice and civil rights are related because civil rights guarantee security in society by laws and constitutions and social justice find ways to enforce and provide equality for groups of our society.
An example of civil rights would be the bill passed in 1920 that granted women of American to vote. Due to civil rights, a law was passed that forced society to accept that women should have equal rights as men and was given the right to vote. An example of social justice would be the Black Lives Matter campaign. This movement was established by members of a race that felt that they were not being treated equally which goes against their civil rights.
