Goal
The overall purpose of this project is to have you select your topic of choice (what CJ issue concerns you the most). Students are encouraged and supported to conduct critical research on (1) how is the history on this issue recorded and by whom, (2) what are the historical, political, criminal justice policy or societal significant moments effecting this issue, (3) what are the present challenges, and (4) how are we imagining the future? This is a “pilot” assignment for seniors taking CJBS 415 capstone seminar in Spring 2024 semester. The assignment is intended to have seniors practice oral presentation and persuasive skills based on research, policy, practice and lived experiences.
Guideline
Start with a story, case study and/or statistics that capture your topic well (make it personal if you want and if you feel comfortable).
What is the general topic (crime, criminal justice issue, social or racial justice issue)?
Introduce and interpret statistics (quantitative reasoning)
What is the specific issue you are addressing (significance of it)?
What causes it? (theoretical frameworks, research, policy)
Who is impacted?
Who are the main perpetrators (who do we need to hold accountable in the CJ system law enforcement, courts, corrections, others?)
Introduce one solution (go in depth). What reform/change is needed?
How would you execute this proposed solution?
Is there an existing organization tackling this issue?
If one is a victim/survivor or impacted by this issue where to go for help?
If you are a stakeholder (person of interest), what can you do more?
Closing statement.
Preparation & Presentation
To prepare for this oral presentation, you are asked to first write the ted talk script using academic writing style (APA format) and utilize peer review articles, reports and information from think tank agencies/institutions/organizations.
Students will present their ted talk in class for 7 minutes. It is highly recommended that students practice their presentation with their peers or others to make sure they do not go over 7 minutes. Students may use powerpoints or utilize the classroom computer/projector for visual representations.
After class presentation, we will follow a brief discussion and classmates and Professor will give feedback and generate new questions for the presenter. Student will revise their ted talk if needed and submit it via Blackboard–
