In addition, students are expected to write a 7-page, double-spaced, paper (due on May 23, 2024) discussing the following issue: Why is militant (jihadi) political Islam still a threat? A detailed paper prompt will be provided after the first three weeks of the course).
Paper Format:
Web tools will be used to check for plagiarism. References should be identified (only for those cited in the paper). A minimum of five references is required; preferably peer-reviewed articles (limit web sources that are not peer reviewed to two references).
Use language understandable to the general public; define terms. Papers submitted late will be penalized one letter grade for each day they are late.
Students are strongly encouraged to read a major newspaper or newsmagazine to enhance class discussion. (You should use resources available on the Web. Various news services, including the Los Angeles Times are available on the Web. Some will give you just newswire reporting and nothing more extensive or analytic. But some will give you full-length articles. Some will let you search archives, which go back (varying lengths of time). Some newsmagazines, such as The New Republic, are available on the Web. Check out the Electronic Newsstand (where you can search archives of past issues as well).
