Education (K-12) is in a crisis of controversy, indecision, and decreasing public vocal and financial support. With budget cuts, high drop-out rates, decreased parental involvement, and school violence, the self-confidence, morale, and motivation of some teachers and school administrators are low. Today, higher proportions of students in the United States are finishing high school and going to college; however, there are discrepancies between White students and minority students. Hispanic, Black, and American Indian/ Alaska Native students still have lower graduation rates. Additionally, some schools are so victimized by vandalism and violence that students and teachers are as concerned with their own safety as with education. School violence continues with ongoing reports of bullying within the schools and mass shootings at schools; fear of victimization is now the culture of some of our schools. The educational system in our country faces a number of crises.
1. Identify 2 reasons – why do you think school systems in the United States have failed to provide equal opportunity for a high-quality education to all the students?
