Introduction:
Attention-getter: this needs to GRAB the reader’s attention. NO GENERIC STATEMENTS ALLOWED (ex: Americans can be defined in many ways)
Link: explain the importance of your attention-getter; why did you choose this particular AG to go into details on the American dream? You can’t do this part until you actually have an attention-getter.
Thesis: state the texts, authors, and trait OR strategy (if you have more than two titles, you could insert the titles into your topic sentences)
What are different ways you can make an effective attention-getter?
Quote from a different source – if you do this option, you MUST include an in-text citation (author’s name) and be able to find the source information to do a Works Cited page with that source (publication date, name of site, etc.)

Anecdote – a general, hypothetical story that lends itself to the topic of your paper (ex: writing a quick, 2-4 sentence story about someone who has been dealt a difficult time financially). This could be fictional or you could pull a true story for this (but you would need to cite the information if it is true because it would come from a source).

Detailed, descriptive or startling statement
Statistic (with in-text citation and, again, information to eventually write your Works Cited)

Restated thesis using different words
Link: analyze the ideas you have discussed throughout the essay and take it to the next level; what do all these points/claims show about the character of Americans?
Impact statement: Link back to ideas in your attention-getter to bring it full-circle
